Establishing Native Forests factsheet series

Project Status: Completed

A new factsheet series on establishment and management of native forest is now available on the Tāne’s Tree Trust website. It was primarily funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Billion Trees Programme with support from The Tindall Foundation.

The factsheets provide illustrated practical guidelines on establishment and management of native forest to meet environmental, economic, social and cultural objectives. The series is aimed at those interested in native forests for multiple purposes including farming and forestry sectors, community groups, iwi and Māori trusts, corporates, investors, management agencies, environmental and forestry consultants and NGOs, schools and the general public.

Information in each factsheet is based on the latest research and operational experience covering a wide range of areas including:

  • The basics of planting, seed collection and ecosourcing, site preparation, best-practice planting methods, use of nurse crops and monitoring;
  • Alternative scenarios to blanket planting including natural reversion of native forest at scale and the use of seed islands to promote nature-based restoration;
  • Establishing woodlots and the economic potential of native forests;
  • Resilience of native forest to expected impacts of climate change; and
  • The wider cultural, social and environmental benefits of native forests.
